Quick thought

A website i would like to see,

In today’s search engine, we see smart searches relating to what you have searched before just like amazon has “recommended to you”

Why not do that with clothing websites?  How about a dedicated website where it tracks your past online purchases online, to determine your style of clothing, your size and searches the internet for similar clothing deals etc.

is there already a website out there like this?

FourSquare

As I read through different Social Media blogs and forums I can’t help and wonder what the new “Thing” going to be for 2010.
Twitter seemed to dominate 2009, I saw the popularity of Twitter grow overnight.
In my mind, I keep thinking, whats next? what will be the new social media king of the hill?

As with many other bloggers and writers, I believe the answer is www.foursquare.com
Foursquare is a new tool that allows users to “check in” to different locations throughout their city.
Like  a game you can unlock different badges, which are just for fun.

The biggest use, would be user comments tips and to dos. Once you check into a location, lets say a local coffee shop. From then you can see who the “Mayor” of that local coffee shop. (Mayor just means the person who checks in to that particular location the most) You can also view tips. Tips are user recommendations, lets say you read one that says the “Holiday Lattes are just amazing!”  or “Avoid the Holiday Lattes! Gross!” You already get a sense of what is good and what is bad.

I hope that wasn’t too confusing for anybody, but basically location social media I believe will emerge as one of the new social media “thing” for 2010. Why?

Businesses can take advantage of this, to have a sense of the patrons of their business. Some businesses have even offered discounts or freebies to the “Mayor” of their location.

Everyday users, Another way to show around where you are, where you eat, where you shop. It can define who are you are.

Tips, The best part of this is the viral marketing. Much like yelp, user reviews seems to the best thing to trust and not editorial magazines. Reviews from normal users appear to have a greater effect than made editorial magazines etc.

So join me on foursquare! im Zixiciv
If you are already on foursquare what are some other benefits?

Personal Branding (for young professionals)

Whenever this term has been mentioned or used, I feel like there isn’t enough emphasis towards it.
And when I speak of this term, I am talking in regards to college students/grads looking for a new job/internship.

I always hear  to disable your Facebook, protect your Twitter so recruiters and companies won’t be able to see snoop around. Hearing that incriminating can retract job offers or not even allow for an interview.  Which makes sense, having this large pool of potential hires, the one half dressed doing a keg stand in the middle of the afternoon may not be so… appealing.

Here’s my two cents on this topic: Don’t hide from social media, embrace  it.

Clean out your facebook, you don’t have to hide everything possible… but keep it classy. You can be drinking, but don’t have pictures of yourself passed out and vomit all over yourself.

Keep your updates/tweets professional.. have a voice, have an opinion, be a leader.

Google yourself and see what other social media mediums come up for you. Maintain those and make sure the message you want to portray on Linkedin is ALSO portrayed on Facebook, Twitter, Imeem.

Most of this appears to be common sense, I know. But a little effort can help in the long run.

What other suggestions do you have for personal branding?

Expert

There are amazing people in this world, who have such a positive outlook on life. People who know exactly who they are and I mean really understand themselves and their significance to this world. I admire these people, those who seem to have their foot constantly on the gas pedal.

So where does all this confidence stem from? How do those who aren’t so certain about themselves become to that level.
I know for a fact that I have problems trying to find my footprint in life. Even now I still cannot fill out the section for “expertise” or “specialty” in my LinkedIn profile.

What is your area of expertise?

Napping

If you know me, I have always hated taking naps. I believe that naps waste time, time that could be spent doing something more productive.

But recently, i’ve started taking a lot more accidental naps. And i guess I realize thats its around 4 AM and im blogging about naps.

I should really be sleeping.

I’m no superman

Tonight was a very bittersweet for me, my favorite favorite show was coming to an end.  In my mind I was sad to see it go, but excited to see how it would end.
Scrubs has been a large part of my life, If there was a such thing as a comfort show, then Linus is to Blanket as Eric is to Scrubs. (a little Old School SAT there)

This honestly feels like im losing a close friend of mine, I guess it sounds silly missing a television show that much.
But this television show has been a huge part of my high school life and college.

In high school my brother introduced this show to me, and I immediately got hooked. it was almost as if the pilot show brainwashed me.
I introduced this show to some of my close friends and they all got into it as well, instant connection. My friends loved it, ,my brother loved it and I loved it.
This show was a huge part of my week, Thursday night on NBC new scrubs. No laptop, no cell phone,  NO distractions. I was lost in my televsion set for that half an hour.
It got so bad that I started memorizing shows based, and could give specific season and number based off a single joke. Crazy huh? I know.

So what is so good about scrubs?
If you are already addicted to this show, you already know.
What could it be, the goofball characters, the slapstick comedy or the balance between comedy and drama in the show?  Is it the idea that almost all epsiodes a life lesson is explored and projected to the audience, making us all think about our own lives after watching the show.

I have heard that the last few seasons weren’t as good as the first few, and i’m not going to argue with that.
But I can’t turn my back on something like Scrubs, I get so invested in the characters I need to know what happens.

Well I’ve been blabbering for a while now, and I really wanted to say

Thank you JD. Turk, Carla, Elliot, Dr Cox, Janitor, Jordan, Dr. Kelso and the rest of cast. =)

My personal space is 1 seat wide

When you walk into a movie theater, lecture hall or even a Southwest airplane and try to find a seat, we all do something interesting. We all find a seat then sit one seat away from them, unless we know someone and then its okay to sit next to somebody else.

This even holds true in the men’s bathroom, with the urnials. So often I walk in and see everyother urinal is occupied.

I know this observation is a common one, stand up comedians to sociologists hae studied why humans do this. But there is reason to why I chosen to blog about it.

I was sitting in class and someone sits directly next to me, when there are a lot of empty seats, but I didn’t mind. Then this person proceeds to move one seat over, like he realized he had made a mistake, or invaded my personal boundary. Odd..

Spring Break Project(s)

This quarter I was fortunate enough to end finals earlier than normal. I had many projects in mind for this break and one of them was to build a Hackintosh desktop.
I’ll utilize this blog to note down any problems I run into and how difficult to transition from Windows to Mac

Quick specs:

Desktop: HP Slimline S7220N [1.5 celeron (intel), 512 mb ram]
Distrubution: Kalyway 10.5.2 .

 Errors:

1) While installing Kalyway i get an error:
    cannot write to “volumes/untitled/Basesystem Pkg.1619.Dvk

Solution: While choosing which disk to install OSX, go to disk utility (on the top), rename the partition which you plan on formatting to “Leopard”  and all is well.

2) After install,  OSX asks you to restart to complete the install. Currently I am stuck i in an restart loop… GREAT.
(side note, I left the install on over night, at 75 percent and I woke up this morning and realized my computer has been restarting itself throughout the night…)

      Solution: (nothing.)

Edit: 3:55 PM

So I realize that it has been a while since I updated my progress on this journey so heres a run down.
1) After fiddling around with the problem 2,  my coworker made me realize that im trying run OsX on a Celeron 1.5, 512 of ram… The performance is going to be horrid.
2) I took out the 200 Gig HDD from this desktop and placed it  my other Desktop.
3) Now trying to install OSX on a much powerful device I am running into another problem… execpt its AMD

4) Install gets stuck at “Kernal Version: Darwin Kernel Version 9.2.0: Sun Mar 2 00:11:08 SCT 2008; made by ToH:xu-1228/Build/obj/RELEASE_I386
5) have tried all special boot commands and everything gets stuck here.

…I am now thinking that I need another distrubution type?

3/28/2009 update:

I have tried with 3 different types of distrubution and all of them have failed me even after tweaking small details.
It appears that my hardware just wasn’t fit for an OSX install.

Now i dont see that this is a total lose of time on my end. I knew it would be a difficult challenge and I learned from it. =)

See you next year.. same time and place?

Television shows have recently come to my attention that they are just like close friends. The audience develops a relationship to the shows, be it loyalty… watching every episode or religious praise… memorizing every detail and inside joke/reference.

So consider when your favorite show ends their season, with a season finale, a last hurrah .. some sort of celebration. What happens when a close friend leaves for an extended amount of time? A dinner party, a goodbye party.

During this separation there will always be some sort of contact between you and your friend. A weekly email about how different everything is and an update of their life. Television shows often use the web to shoot updates, just letting know how they are doing… when they are expected back.

The worst part, when a show gets canceled or if there is talk of canceling a show. Tears are shed. It almost seems as if a doctor has given a time frame … and you just sit there counting down how many more episodes till you never see them again. And im sure that i don’t need to draw out a comparison for this analogy.
